Kayaker rescued at Mount Maunganui beach

A man has been rescued from the sea after he became unwell while kayaking near Rabbit Island at Mount Maunganui this afternoon.

A police media spokeswoman said police recieved a call from a member of the public after they spotted a kayaker in trouble near Rabbit Island (Motuotau) in Mount Maunganui just after 2.30pm.

She said the man had became unwell while on his kayak and a rescue boat was deployed to bring the man back to shore.

"He was taken to Tauranga Hospital," she said.

Police and St John ambulance attended the scene.
