TOURING: Jamie McDell will play the Mauao Performing Arts Centre on April 25.

It might be called Ask Me Anything, but Jamie McDell says her second album is "much less about me" than her first.

The talented songwriter and songstress has used far less of her own experiences for writing material on new album Ask Me Anything.

She is more interested in other people's perspectives and experiences.

"I think I have grown up. I definitely think, with my first album, it was all about me and my emotions at the time ... they were songs I had written from ages 16-18 about myself and my own stories," the 22-year-old says.

"This second album is about taking perspective from other people stories, I'm more inspired by what other people have to say now."

Take, for example, her new smash-hit Crash, based on a friend's rollercoaster of a relationship.

"It's something I took from friends of mine. They had a really bad falling out and we watched it dramatically unfold and it turned out to be an unfair situation for both of them."

Jamie loves telling people the stories behind her songs and is interactive with fans on Facebook.

"Ask Me Anything - well, it's a bit risky, but I enjoy making the fanbase approachable and having fans ask me about their favorite parts of songs."

Jamie was barely out of her teens when she was signed to a development deal while still at high school in Mangawhai.

This album is about taking perspective from other people's stories... I'm more inspired by what other people have to say now.

Jamie McDell

She has a profound love of the ocean and her family spent several years sailing the Mediterranean.

The young star has always known she was destined for the music business, but has a passion for graphic design.

She's hands-on with visual artistry and album covers.

Jamie won best pop album for her first album Six Strings and a Sailboat.

The up-and-comer is contemplating a genre shift back to country roots for the next phase of her career. This may take her to the country music hub of Nashville.

Jamie McDell, Ask Me Anything Tour. Saturday April 25 at Mauao Performing Arts Centre.
