An small fire which got out of hand threatened a house in Whakamarama before firefighters got it under control this morning.

Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Alan Pearce said a small fire lit at a property on Old Highway in Whakamarama quickly got out of hand and an area of scrub about 40m by 10m caught fire.

"At one stage it threatened the house. At one point it did get a bit dangerous," he said.

Firefighters from Greerton and Tauranga had now put the fire out and managed to save the house from any damage, he said.

Mr Pearce said a fire permit was still necessary before fires were allowed to be lit and he reminded people to be cautious as grass and scrub was still very dry at the moment.

"The grass is extremely flammable. Make sure that when you light a fire on the ground under our current circumstances, with your permit, the ground is clear of anything flammable and that includes grass."
