Tauranga Hospital has shifted from using gas to diesel following closure of the 313 kilometre Maui Pipeline which supplies gas to large industry users and electricity generation plants.
The pipeline from Maui that supplies gas to the upper North Island has been closed to investigate a possible leak impacting gas
generation north of Taranaki.
Transpower communications manager Adele Fitzpatrick said there was no immediate issue in Transpower meeting demand for electricity.
"`From Transpower's perspective many of those power stations that use gas to get electricity aren't operating so we are finding electricity from other generation sources around the North Island to ensure the electricity demands are being met. We've called on other generation _ hydro, geothermal, wind,'' she said.
Transpower is working closely with Vector, who is managing the pipeline issue on behalf of Maui Development Ltd.
A spokesperson from PowerCo said the closure of the pipeline was not affecting its gas network.
