The man who threw an iron bar at a car, which lodged in another man's head, was today sentenced to 10 months home detention.

Shayne Zonneveld cried as Judge Robert Wolff described the impact the injury has had on the victim Adam Artimage's life.

On January 17, Mr Armitage walked into Katikati Caltex service station, holding an iron bar which was lodged in his head, and asked for help.

The court heard today Zonneveld was asked to assist a friend who believed his sister was in danger from an ex-partner, a friend of Mr Armitage.

After a confrontation, Mr Armitage attempted to drive away and Zonneveld threw an iron bar at the car.

The bar struck the car's B-pillar, then lodged in Mr Armitage's head.

Although in considerable pain, Mr Armitage drove to a service station and asked for help.

Judge Wolff sentenced Zonneveld to 10 months home detention, 200 hours community work and was ordered to pay reparation of $8800.
