Tauranga's iconic art gallery Harrisons on 11th Ave will be closing down the gallery side of the business after the weekend.

One of Harrisons Gallery's owners Sue Carrothers confirmed that they will stop representing artists and an email has been sent out to the artists to thank them and to ask them to collect their works from the gallery.

Mrs Carrothers said the closure is "for the time being".

"Our doors are not closed. The art supplies sales continue and the framing business is also still open. We are still here", Mrs Carrothers said.

There is still artwork on the walls and the current exhibition will run until after the weekend.

"Harrisons Gallery will be moving in a similar, yet slightly different direction but those plans are still very much in the pipeline at the moment", she said.

The team behind the gallery expects to present their ideas on the future more clearly next week.

Harrisons Gallery has been in business as an art gallery for over 50 years.
