A group of Tauranga Girls' College students will be shut in a cage today to raise awareness about the mistreatment of women in Egypt.
Students in the Amnesty International group came up with events this week to mark Freedom Week and raise awareness about human rights issues.
Emily McCarthy, 16,said Freedom Week was about getting the message across that not everyone was as fortunate as people living in New Zealand.
"Hopefully the cage demonstration will bring a big crowd so people will be more aware of what's happening out there. [Yesterday] we got people to sign a petition for women's rights in Egypt. We're hoping to give it to the political leaders in Egypt so they can think of women's status in their country and do something about it."
The college's Amnesty group co-ordinator, Don Wallis, said there were about 80 girls in the group.
On Monday they decked out one of the school blocks in an "explosion of yellow" - the Amnesty colour. On Tuesday they got students to paint red handprints on a strip of material to show support for human rights and on Wednesday they had a chalk drawing contest.
