Gemma McCaw opens up on expecting her first baby with husband Richie. / The AM Show

New mum-to-be, Gemma McCaw, has discussed the arrival of her first baby later this year and weighed in on the Prime Minister's decision to take baby Neve to the United Nations general assembly.

After announcing via Instagram in July that she and husband Richie McCaw are expecting, this morning the former Black Sticks captain has answered some more baby questions.

Poppping up on MediaWorks' breakfast show to read the morning sports news, McCaw was quizzed by hosts Amanda Gillies and Duncan Garner about bringing her first baby into the world.

Gillies asked if she'd thought about pulling a Julie Anne Genter and riding a bike to hospital.

"I could take the bike but I think I'll take the car just to be safe," she responded, amused. "Err on the side of caution."

Garner followed up by asking what McCaw thought of Ardern taking baby Neve "onto the floor of the United Nations".

"I think in some respects she had to take her family with her," she said.

"So in terms of that it was what she needed to do at the time and I guess what she felt she needed to do, and was best during that time over there."

Last weekend McCaw posted snaps from her baby shower, sharing pictures with Richie and friends and commenting "Our baby is going to be blessed with so many special people."
