Sport Bay of Plenty is piloting a new five week cycle skills course designed to help adults become more cycle savvy.

This practical course was designed for those new to cycling or those who had not been on a bike for a long time.

The course will give participants the skills and confidence to ride on the road or on the off-road cycle paths around Tauranga.

During the five weeks, cyclists will learn about bike set up, how to fix a puncture, the use of gears, safe cycle skills, managing intersections and roundabouts and the great network of off road cycle trails around Tauranga.

The free course will run on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 11am starting on October 28.

Jen Riley, recreation advisor at Sport Bay of Plenty, said cycling was a great activity for all ages.

"A lot of people learned to ride a bike as a child but in some cases haven't ridden one since.

"Sport Bay of Plenty is keen to get these people back on their bikes and enjoying the numerous benefits that can be had from cycling. Not only is cycling great for your fitness and health it's something the whole family can do."

Ms Riley said Tauranga people were lucky that not only was there a fantastic climate for cycling, but there were a number of great trails that could be used to get around the city.

"This will only get better once the Omokoroa to Tauranga cycle way is completed."

For more information about this course or to register your interest contact Jen Riley, Sport Bay of Plenty, on (07) 578 0016 ext 829 or email jenr@sportbop.co.nz.
