A Bay of Plenty law firm has challenged other companies to follow their lead and donate their TECT cheque to the Tauranga Community Foodbank as part of the 2014 Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal.

Holland Beckett Lawyers last week donated their $1892.05 TECT rebate to the charity, bringing the total donated in the first week of the campaign to $2750.

Holland Beckett partner Lara Burkhardt said it was the fourth year the firm had donated its rebate and it had become a popular tradition.

"This is money we don't budget on receiving. It's a nice bonus we get that we can pass on to a cause," she said.

"We get the TECT refund cheque at this point in time right before Christmas when there are so many families in need."

It was something every business could do and was relative to the size of the company as the rebate was based on power consumption.

Ms Burkhardt said the "timing of the TECT refund coincides with the foodbank annual appeal, so it's an easy decision to make to donate that refund to the particular cause at a time of year when it's needed. We encourage other businesses to consider it," she said.

"Donating our TECT cheque is a great way for Hobec to support the vital funding role TECT plays in our community and is another good reason to be a Trustpower customer."

The company was fully supportive of the foodbank's work.
