Firefighters were called to put out a fire that started inside a van and spread to a nearby tree this morning.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said firefighters were called to the blaze on Waikareao Way just before 10.30am.

The fire started inside a van that was parked underneath a tree, the spokesman said.

"The tree caught fire as well," he said.

One firetruck from Tauranga was called to the scene.
