The serious crash unit was called in to investigate the fatal Tauranga crash.

A Tauranga highway is open this morning following a fatal crash overnight.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on Takitimu Drive, near SH29, around 7.30pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said one person died at the scene and a second person was critically injured.

Fire brigades from Tauranga and Greerton responded to the scene.

The road was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit time to examine the scene.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson saids they were notified of the crash at 7.27pm, and responded with three ambulances and one rapid response vehicle.

”One patient was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.”

According to a Tauranga Transport Operations Centre spokesperson, the Takitimu Dr toll road was closed between Tauriko SH29 and 15th Ave exit.

An NZTA Waka Kotahi highway alert today said the road re-opened around 3am.

Police were continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
