Jasmine Moor (left), Kodi Minnell, Janaya Worthington, Sasha Gudsell and Sophie Shrimpton invented a posture support device. They're with Zara Ainsley, 10, of Gate Pa School.

A group of Tauranga Girls' College students have created a special ergonomically designed laptop stand to help prevent bad posture.

The students yesterday donated two support stands to Gate Pa School, to be used by the teachers or students when working with laptop computers.

The support stands were created by Young Enterprise Scheme team Magenta, made up of students Jasmine Moor, 17, Kodi Minnell, 17, Janaya Worthington, 17, Sasha Gudsell, 18, and Sophie Shrimpton, 17.

Janaya, the team's chief executive, said the support stands helped with posture when sitting and working with a laptop.

"It's aligned to 13 degrees, which helps straighten up your back. It has a gripped surface so your laptop doesn't slip and creates ventilation to stop it overheating."

Janaya said the group was selling the stands for $40 each and had already sold most of their first batch.

Gate Pa School principal Richard Inder said the donated stands would be used by senior students and he believed his staff would be interested in them.

"We had a physio come in last week to train our staff about correct posture.

"Anything that can improve the posture of our students and teachers long-term is good," Mr Inder said.
