A person has died after a water incident in Mount Maunganui.

A police spokesman said the person was pulled from the water unresponsive at Pilot Bay and emergency services were notified just before 8.20am.

“Inquiries are ongoing, and a formal identification process is under way.”

Earlier, a SunLive reader said about 12 people were standing around a white sheet.

“Two ambulances, one fire truck and two police cars were present,” the reader said.

A Pilot Bay resident said they believed the person had been swimming.

The incident is believed to have occurred between Commons Ave and Leinster Ave.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said they were notified of an incident near The Mall, Mount Maunganui about 8.18am.
