A busy Tauranga CBD street was closed yesterday after an elderly woman was hit by a car.

A 76-year-old Tauranga woman was in a critical condition at Tauranga Hospital after the accident.

Emergency services blocked part of Devonport Rd between 1st, and 2nd Ave and cars were diverted away from the scene, which was right outside the Tauranga AA building.

Pedestrians were also being told to stay off the footpath near the scene.

A police media spokeswoman said police were called to the scene at 11.59 am.

"The person has serious injuries," the spokeswoman said.

A reporter at the scene said one person had been put in an ambulance on a stretcher.

A witness who works in the Sharp Tudhope Lawyers building said they came down to Devonport Rd to get lunch when they saw an elderly woman laying on the road.
