Donations for sick boy amaze mum

The parents of a 10-year-old boy with a rare form of cancer are in disbelief at the generosity shown to their family from complete strangers.

Fiona Alison said she and husband Blair Alison could not believe how many people offered donations for an auction this weekend, set up to raise money for their son Logan's treatment at Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital.

More than 80 donations have already been listed, including a children's Kawasaki motocross bike, Sky Walk voucher and rugby balls signed by All Blacks.

''I just can't believe that a community can be so generous,'' Mrs Alison said.

''We look at what's happened and think 'this is for our son'. It's absolutely incredible. Also, what's more overwhelming is that it's people who we don't know and haven't come across.

''My gosh, how can people that don't even know us be so generous when there are probably others they could be generous to?''

On Queen's Birthday Weekend, Logan was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma - a rare and cancerous tumour that grows in bones or the soft tissue near bones.

The diagnosis meant Mrs Alison had to give up her job at Tahatai Coast School and care for Logan full-time while Mr Alison juggled a new job with time off to be with the family in Auckland.

Three months on, Logan is now well into chemotherapy treatment which has already reduced the tumour to just 15 per cent of its original size.

Apart from tiredness, Logan was ''doing okay'', Mrs Alison said.

Fellow mum and friend Leaha Wykes organised Sunday's auction, which real estate agent Grant Childs offered to run.

''It's brilliant. It's just so much to think that our community really cares. That's what I think is the most amazing thing over all - there are some really good people out there,'' Ms Wykes said.
