A $10,000 donation to the Bay Oval from a local business will go towards developing international standard lighting at the grounds.

Representatives from Bayleys Real Estate Bay of Plenty presented a $10,000 cheque to the Bay Oval Trust at yesterday's one -day cricket match at the Oval.

Chairman and managing director Richard Cashmore said the company wanted to support Bay of Plenty Cricket and the magnificent effort they had put into the facility, and compliment them on what they had achieved. "It's an investment in the region and putting New Zealand on the cricket world stage."

Chris Pringle, of the Bayleys Tauranga residential sales team, played for the Black Caps in 14 tests and 64 one-day internationals in the 1990s. He presented the cheque to Chris Rapson, Bay Oval trustee, who said the money would be used towards developing international standard lighting at the venue.

Mr Rapson said getting an international match to Bay Oval was a 12-year project. "We decided to build a first class international venue, and here we are." Getting the lights at the venue could pave the way for night test matches, he said.
