6.05pm: A female cyclist is in hospital tonight after a crash between a car and bike on 11th Ave.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of 11th Ave and St John St about 5:30pm.

St John paramedics attended to a woman on the road for about 15 minutes before transporting her to hospital in the ambulance.

The woman's bike was lying nearby on the footpath next to her smashed helmet.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said it was a good reminder for people about the importance of helmets.

"That there is an indication of what would've happened to her head of she hadn't been wearing a helmet," he said.

"That would've been her head."

He understood the woman was travelling west on 11th Ave and turning right into St John St when the crash happened with a car travelling east on 11th Ave in the left lane.
