Tauranga's Brett Hampton was part of an extraordinary display of big hitting for Northern Districts against Central Districts in the Ford Trophy match in Hamilton yesterday. The Greerton club player smashed 95 off 66 balls, and in combination with Joe Carter set what may be a world record for themost runs off an over in a List A one-day match.
The two hammered 43 off young Central Districts medium pacer Willem Ludick in the 46th over of the innings. There were six sixes, but as Ludick bowled 2 no balls, which each conceded an extra run and meant two other deliveries, the Northern Districts batsmen dined out.
Hampton faced the start of the over hitting a four and then two sixes off the two no balls. Then he hit another six, took a single and left it to Carter to finish off Ludick's misery with three more sixes.
The Tauranga player was out in the next over for 95, his highest score in Ford Trophy cricket.
He and Carter, who finished 102 not out, rescued Northern Districts from a disastrous position. The home team were 95 for five in the 26th over when Hampton joined Carter. Together they scored 178 in 21 overs together as the Knights reached 313 for 7 in their 50 overs.
It wasn't Hampton's first big hitting display of the season. In the first weekend of club cricket last month he hit 155 off 70 balls for Greerton against Te Puke, and he made 79 not out against Auckland in the first Ford Trophy match of the season, an innings that included six fours and four sixes.
