UPDATED 8.36pm: Tauranga bound traffic is now heavily congested following an incident near Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

A reporter at the scene said traffic was backed up from Tauranga Marina to at least Maunganui Rd as emergency services worked to clear the scene at the marina intersection.

A 4WD towing a trailer became wedged on the centre barrier after the driver appeared to have slammed on his brakes to avoid crashing into the vehicle in front of him, the reporter said.

At first, Mount Maunganui bound traffic was backed up but now a tow truck was at the scene, on the Tauranga bound side, congestion at Mount Maunganui had become particularly bad, the reporter said.

EARLIER: Traffic is backed up after a crash near the Tauranga Harbour Bridge this morning.
