Council relaxes stance on Mauao's jandal fence

The jandals at Mauao are here to stay - until summer's end, anyway.

Tauranga City Council has decided to leave Mauao's jandal fence up until the end of summer, pleasing its creator.

Rebecca Perrett, manager of environmental services at the council, said the decision had been made to keep the jandal fence that has been erected at the start of Mauao's walking tracks until the end of summer.

The decision to keep the fence was made due to public feedback.

The fence has already been removed once this year after complaints to the council.

Fence creator Carl, who did not want his last name published, was pleased with the result.

"It's really positive on behalf of the council. Perhaps we can get another one going next year or keep adding to it.

"I'd like to see it as a permanent fixture at the Mount, maybe even try and get one the whole way around."

He said he received lots of support from the public in positive comments made online.

"It's just something I did for a bit of a laugh."
