A combination of crunchy peanut butter and hazelnut spread has won bragging rights for a group of Tauranga Girls' College students.

For the past six months more than 180 students from six schools have been developing and marketing various products as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). The winners were announced on Wednesday night.

Tauranga Girls' College team Soar were named the regional winners after creating a product called Collide, a crunchy peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut spread. The group worked in collaboration with Ceres Organics based in Auckland to create the product.

Regional Young Enterprise Scheme co-ordinator Anne Pankhurst said all of the YES teams had a strong social awareness and one of the great things Soar did was provide breakfast one Friday for the Gate Pa School. She said the breakfast was well attended when the students were given Collide on toast.

The runner-up team was Royala Enterprise from Otumoetai College, who partnered with local firm Kiwifruitz to create a bar called #nombar. Kiwifruitz have just finished another production run which will be sold in shops in China and Argentina.

"What is particularly exciting is the high standard of business ideas that our region produces," Ms Pankhurst said.

"The winner of the regional award will now travel to Wellington and present to a panel of Dragons' Dens and may receive a national award."
