Flicking a cigarette butt outside came back to haunt occupants of a Welcome Bay home when the butt ignited a small fire at the house.
Greerton firefighters were called out to a Te Arawa Pl house at 2am yesterday with reports a house was on fire.
The fire had started
from a disgarded cigarette butt that fell down onto an outside deck, and began to burn at the house, firefighter Greg Meikle said.
"The fire went up the inside of a support pole, which caused a small fire in the inside of the wall."
A smoke alarm alerted the home's occupants, who then dialled 111.
