Tauranga City Council has been challenged about how it disposes of its expired batteries by a group of primary school children.
A delegation of children from Matua Primary School addressed councillors yesterday to encourage the council to recycle waste batteries.
The children have taken to heart a lesson they recentlylearned about disposing of batteries in a responsible way and have encouraged their families and friends to take their expired batteries to a council transfer station rather than throwing them out in the rubbish.
The school children have collected more than a wheelie bin and a half of expired batteries since they began their project.
Batteries taken to the transfer station were sent overseas and almost completely recycled, the children said.
Mayor Stuart Crosby congratulated the children on their work and said the council would make sure batteries from council offices were disposed of responsibly.
The council was bound to have more than a wheelie bin and a half of batteries to dispose of, Mr Crosby said.
