Update 2.16pm: The road has been reopened and the chemical spill cleaned up.

Firecommunications shift manager Scott Osmond said the crew tidied it up pretty quickly and it was not a serious spill.

A stretch of road in Papamoa has been closed due to a chemical spill, believed to be acid.

Fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said The Boulevard in Papamoa between Golden Sands Drive roundabout and the Livingstone Dr roundabout was closed.

He said the spill was possibly acid, though diluted. Fire services were getting advice from Bay of Plenty Regional Council as to what the spill was and how best to clean it up.

Three fire units responded to the call out, including the hazmat team - firefighters trained to deal with dangerous materials.

Police were at the scene helping with traffic control.
