After the high pressure of running a New Zealand championship and a New Zealand Grand Prix in recent weeks, Baypark Speedway heads off in a totally different direction at the weekend.
Saturday sees the staging of the first of two scheduled demolition derbies at the track - plus the amazing spectacleof a caravan derby as an entree.
On January 1 the track hosted the New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix, won by visiting American Late Model driver Jared Hawkins, and last weekend a two-night meeting saw another American, Jonathan Allard, take the New Zealand Sprint Car title.
This weekend's action will provide a wholly different form of entertainment.
Always a crowd favourite, the caravan derby isn't entirely accurately named with boat trailer and a high sided trailer, plus a dunny, set to take to the track.
"I think we are all looking forward to a bit of light relief and speedway of a different kind that appeals to a different demographic," says promoter Willie Kay.
Before the caravan derby, there will be a programme of sprint car, saloon, stock car and youth mini stock races. The fun starts on Saturday from 7pm.
