A car has flipped and collided with a bank after it lost a wheel near Maungatapu bridge this afternoon.

Police and St John responded to a small vehicle which lost a wheel and collided with a bank on State Highway 29.

The sole occupant of the car suffered minor cuts and bruises and appeared to have been shaken.

A small section of the left lane was closed off but traffic was not affected.

Constable Paul Gunner said the cause of the crash was a mechanical fault and the crash could not have been predicted.
