Speed is believed to have been a factor in a crash in which a car carrying four men felled a power pole and smashed a fence in Mount Maunganui.
The men, believed to be in their 20s, were in a Subaru Impreza when the car crashed on the corner of Concord
Ave and Maunganui Rd at the weekend.
Property owner Faye Knagg said she and her husband Ray had just switched off the light for the night on Friday when they heard a crash about 11pm.
"We jumped out of bed and ran to see what all the noise was about."
She said she got outside and saw two men fleeing the scene, leaving two others trapped in the upturned car.
Greerton Police Senior Constable Chris Hills confirmed that when police arrived at the property there were two men "encapsulated" in the car.
The 25-year-old Tauranga driver was taken to Tauranga Hospital with back injuries. The 20-year-old passenger suffered leg fractures.
Mr Hills said one of the other men later returned to the crash scene.
Police were still investigating but said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
Power was cut to about 1600 homes for about an hour, Powerco said.
It was not the first time the Knaggs have found themselves in the middle of an accident scene.
"A car has come through the fence before but that time it happened a little further down the road."
Mrs Knagg said she and her husband also regularly end up directing traffic on Maunganui Rd after accidents.
"It is a dangerous corner that is prone to accidents."
Meanwhile, two 15-year-old boys are in Tauranga Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a power pole on Sunday.
The accident, which happened about midnight on Dunlop Rd, Te Puke, was attended by two ambulances - from Te Puke and Mount Maunganui.
One boy was trapped in the wreckage for 40 minutes while paramedics worked to free him. One boy is believed to be in a serious condition; the other suffered minor injuries.
While it was not clear whether either accident was the result of boy racers, a police operation targeting that group over the past week has been a success.
Last week, 64 vehicles were impounded for offences such as drag racing, burnouts and illegal modifications. Police feared a big boy racer Labour Weekend after a riot last year but there were no major problems reported.
Greerton Police Senior Sergeant Barry Woon confirmed more vehicles were impounded over the weekend but said the past few days had been quieter than expected.
"Perhaps our presence over the last week is working," Mr Woon said.
