Body found at Government Gardens: Not suspicious, police say

A body has been found at the Government Gardens in Rotorua.

Police were called to the scene near the Rotorua Bowling Club and Blue Baths around 10am Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

Access to Rachel Spring remained restricted this morning with tape surrounding the area and the road closed.

The death is not believed to be suspicious, a police spokeswoman said.

Rotorua tourist attraction The Polynesian Spa draws water from Rachel Spring but said on Facebook none of its pools had been affected.

The spa last took water from the spring yesterday, July 19.

"Our heartfelt sympathies are with all those who are affected by this tragedy," it said online.

"The Rachel Spring is one of two natural geothermal springs from which Polynesian Spa draws water for its pools.

"The last time water was drawn from the Rachel Spring for Polynesian Spa was on the evening of 19 July, well ahead of this tragic event on the morning of 20 July.

"None of the water in the Polynesian Spa pools has been affected by this sad tragedy," the post said.

"The complex will remain open, but we will not draw water from the Rachel Spring until all correct protocols have been followed. We are liaising closely with the authorities."
