A call for Tauranga City Council to transform Pilot Bay Boardwalk into a shared pedestrian and cycleway is gaining momentum with more than 200 people having signed a petition.
The 920m-long boardwalk opened in 2013.
It's official legal status is a footpath, meaning cyclists are banned from using it.
MountMaunganui resident Jo Wills has gathered 221 signatures on a petition which calls on council to remove the no-cycling ban and replace signage with a "Share with Care" sign.
On Thursday, Ms Wills will present the petition to Tauranga City councillors.
In a report to council, Tauranga City Council's acting general manager infrastructure services Martin Parkes said under local bylaws it was possible to create shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians but council staff recommended against it.
