Waihi Beach is 9km of pure paradise - maybe a bit too long for a stroll to the end and back - but definitely perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a picnic.
The wide sandy beach, surrounded by dunes, is a popular holiday destination with hundreds flocking there each summer to go
camping or relax at a holiday bach.
The main beach is at the far north end where the Surf Life Saving Club patrols each day.
Regarded as one of the safest beaches around New Zealand, Waihi Beach has a great, relaxed atmosphere.
It's an ideal spot for a summer holiday or a day trip - only about a 45-minute drive from Tauranga.
The main beach often gets busy during the long hot summer days, but down from the surf club there are plenty of quiet havens if that is more to your liking.
People come from all over New Zealand and overseas each year to experience the Waihi culture. With a cute boutique town just minutes' drive from the beach, delicious food outlets, and activities such as mini-golf, there is something for everyone.
At the southern end of Waihi Beach is the Bowentown Harbour. With plenty of grassy areas and trees to sit under, it is a fantastic picnic spot.
Kayak or snorkel in the deep blue harbour waters while enjoying the stunning views of Mataka Island.
There are plenty of costal walks to small peaceful beaches set among stunning scenery.
Each walk starts at the far north end of Waihi beach and leads up through the bush along the coastline.
Orokawa Bay is a 45-minute walk from the main Waihi Beach and Homunga Bay is a three-hour walk.
Take plenty of fluids, some sunscreen, and of course a pair of togs for a great day out.
NEED TO KNOW:

Where is Waihi Beach: The main beach is located along The Esplanade, off Beach Road, approximately 45 minutes north of Tauranga.
Public toilets: In the centre of the main beach carpark.
Parking: There is free parking right along Waihi Beach at each beach access. Most have a small carpark for all-day parking.
Closest icecreams: Seaside Dairy on Beach Road, approximately 200m from the main beach
Liquor laws: There is a permanent liquor ban on all beaches, reserves and public places in Waihi Beach.
