A busy Mount Maunganui road is closed following a crash that left two people seriously injured.

A police spokeswoman said the two-car crash happened on Matapihi Rd near the Omanu Golf Course about 7.35am.

A tow truck was dealing with the cleanup, alongside the council.

A St John spokeswoman said two people were taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

A Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman said a 45-year-old Mt Maunganui woman and a 28-year-old Tauranga man were both in Tauranga Hospital in a stable condition.

Three ambulances had been on the scene.

The police spokeswoman said the road would remain closed as the Serious Crash Unit was heading to the scene to investigate.
