A driver has narrowly escaped serious injury after the car they were in crashed down 20-metre bank in Tauranga today .
Shortly before 7.30am emergency services were called to the crash on Pyes Pa Rd, about 300m north of the crematorium.
The car was on its roof at the bottom of the bank and the driver was out.
A police spokeswoman said the driver was assessed by paramedics as having only minor injuries but was transported to Tauranga Hospital for further assessment.
A photographer at the scene said the bank was extremely steep and the car would have plummeted about 20 metres.
Nearby resident Angela van der Velden said it was not the first time a car had gone over the bank, or come very close to going over.
"We have seen several cars go off or nearly go off," she said.
"We go out and we see them sitting on the side and think 'that looked like a close call'."
She said drivers should take great caution on the road, especially when it was slippery.
Matthew Gill, a resident of The Lakes, said a subdivision was being built below the corner.
"I hope for the new Lakes residents building below that this corner gets a safety upgrade. The speed limit is also too high."
It was not the first crash he had known to have happened in the area, having come across a car on the edge of the bank against a damaged barrier on on July 23.
