A Tauranga artist whose unique work has featured in fashion shows around the world has returned home to offer a slice of the international runway to the city.
Shona Tawhiao is among nine local artists who have work featured in a pop-up store named T O I Art and Design on Elizabeth St.
Tawhiao's harakeke (weaving) couture designs have earned a reputation in the fashion and art world. Her work has featured in fashion shows in London, Hawaii, Malaysia and regularly in New Zealand. The designs have also had starring roles in New York museums. But for Tawhiao, home is where the heart is for now.
"It's awesome to be back home and to have my work here," Tawhiao said. "I haven't had a show here at home for a couple of years."
Tawhiao has previously held fashion shows at Tauranga Art Gallery and the waterfront but this is her first effort at a retail store, one that works in collaboration with other local artists whose work is also featured. The store offers "a little bit of everything", from 3D printed jewellery to stunning print work, Tawhiao said.
