A Bay man attempted to rob a Mount Maunganui storekeeper at knifepoint because he wanted to give his unborn child a better start in life, a Tauranga court was told.
Forestry worker Connor Kaleb Cummerfield's motivations for the robbery were revealed at his sentencing in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
Cummerfield, who has been jailed for three years and three months, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to rob last month.
On July 22, Cummerfield attempted to rob the 77-year-old shopkeeper at the Souvenir Store in Maunganui Rd with a large bread knife.
He entered the store about 2pm and after about 30 minutes, he brandished the large bread knife at the shopkeeper and yelled "give me the f****** money".
