Construction of new houses is set to boom in Tauranga with up to 1300 sections set for release under the Government's affordable housing scheme - but Bob Clarkson's land at Tauriko is not included.
The council has been working under urgency to identify land that could be fast-tracked for development into housing estates after hearing from land owners and developers.
About 10 properties ranging in size from 5000sq m to 40ha were close to being submitted to Housing Minister Nick Smith as special housing areas, with a further eight to 10 blocks still under investigation.
Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby said the first phase had the potential to release 1300 sections on to the market, plus another 1500 sections if all the land shortlisted ended up being accepted as special housing areas for affordable housing.
This represented more than three times the number of homes consented in Tauranga last year.
