Tauranga has joined a global YouTube sensation, creating a music video for Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' song.

The original music video was made 24 hours long, with the four minute song repeated, and showed people dancing in the streets of Los Angeles.

Since its release, thousands of cities have made covers of the video and posted them on YouTube naming them "Happy (we are from Tahiti)" or "Dublin is also happy".

Rise Up Tauranga member Rosalie Crawford said the group had caught on to the YouTube trend and wanted to make their own version.

"Tauranga is a happy city so we thought, lets do it," she said.

Filming went on last weekend at various locations around the city.

"We wanted to get iconic shots of Tauranga," she said.
