A plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Papamoa Beach when the engine cut out mid flight.

A plane has made an emergency landing on Papamoa beach.

Police senior media advisor Rachel Purdon said it appeared there had been a fuel issue with the aeroplane.

It was a four-person private aircraft but all those on board were out of the plane and uninjured, she said.

Pilot Colin Loker, who is a part owner of the plane, said the engine stopped completely mid flight so he had to glide on to the beach.

"I tried to restart it but it wouldn't restart. Landing was the only choice. There wasn't enough height for me to get to the airport, t would have been too much of a gamble to glide back to the airport."

Mr Loker said the landing was good and there was no damage to the plane. A friend who runs a microlite maintenance company was helping sort the issues and would help get the plane off the beach at low tide.

Police received the call about 12.29pm. It landed on the sand near Pacific View Rd.

A reporter at the scene said the plane was upright and did not appear damaged.

The case had been transferred to the Civil Aviation Authority, she said.

A Fire Service Northern Communications Centre spokesperson also confirmed there was a plane on the beach and they had been called to the scene.

More to come.
