A 15-year-old skateboarder who crashed on the Tauranga Harbour Bridge is now in Auckland's Starship Hospital with a serious head injury.

Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Todd Dunham said the boy had been skating across the bridge yesterday afternoon when his wheelhit something, which propelled him forward and he hit his head on a rail.

Witnesses said a boat had also pulled up with an offer help to ambulance staff.

Dunham said the boy was driven to Tauranga Hospital before the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to transfer the boy to Auckland about 7pm.
