Loveblock Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014, $25

Well-made, characterful, dry-style pinot gris is something that always puts a smile on my face. Grown on the organically-certified Awatere Valley property owned by Kim and Erica Crawford, this has a lovely line of nashi, poached quince, oyster shell and hints of spicy apple. Crafted by winemaker Michael Glover, from certified organic grapes grown in Nelson's Upper Moutere district, this is a deliciously complex style of sauvignon blanc that's flinty and dry and laced with lime, elderflower and all manner of mineral-edged magic. It's not often you find a merlot from the Coromandel Peninsula, especially not an organic one. It's a robust red, smooth and ripe, with hints of dried herb and pepper characters. Slightly meaty, but lightly structured and really interesting if you're looking for a red wine with character and 'cuddle factor'.
