Triumphs and Other Alternatives is heading to town. Photo/supplied

An original and visceral style of dance theatre, Triumphs and Other Alternatives, is heading to Tauranga next week.

Combining dance, visual art, clowning, design, and theatre craft, Ross McCormack directs and performs this piece of contemporary performance, exploring the obsessiveness and traps of the creative process.

He says many creative people will relate to the work, "where you are looking at your work and liking it, then later coming back to it and saying 'this is crap, I hate it', then after a while, coming back to it and loving it again."

The show follows a vulnerable, delightful, obsessive and narcissistic character, played by McCormack, relentless in his need to create and his desire to leave his mark on the world.

"There is an obsessiveness of the main character that artists, sculptors, writers and even some sportspeople can relate to - where they are frustrated with their skills, yet live the triumphs of their skills."

McCormack says the performance is set within a very literal world of the artist's workshop. The design is powerful and the movement highly virtuosic, complete with a real set, body paint, no reliance on technology such as audio visual.

While the set design is realistic and relatable, so too is the character. "There is a clear protagonist and there is a story that goes along with it. It is relatable in a fantasy sense, there is something surreal about the work."

McCormack has enjoyed a stellar international performance career as a member of Belgium's renowned Les Ballets C de la B Company for 10 years. He recently returned to New Zealand to establish Muscle Mouth, specialising in new forms of visual dance theatre and performance installation.

The world premiere of Triumphs and Other Alternatives took place in April 2015 in Wellington, and has since enjoyed sellout shows and standing ovations.
