Looking after a newborn baby can be a steep learning curve so first-time Katikati parents are being given the chance to gain some valuable support and confidence.
An innovative parenting programme called SPACE (Supporting Parents Alongside Children's Education) will start at Katikati Playcentre in May and is open to babies who are less than five months old and their parents.
The programme is designed to help new mums and dads feel more confident, informed and supported during the first year of their child's life.
Western Bay SPACE co-ordinator Ruth McDermott says the programme is a fantastic way of meeting people whose babies are of a similar age.
"It can be very comforting to hear about what other new mums or dads are experiencing so you don't feel so isolated being at home with a new baby," Ruth says.
Designed so parents can ask questions and seek advice on any infant-related subject the programme will see them learn how to confidently take care of their child and themselves.
Each weekly twoand a half hour session focuses on a different topic, and guest speakers and hands-on activities are often arranged.
Songs and music are incorporated into SPACE as an important part of every session.
Ruth says the main benefits of the programme are that new parents are taught to trust their instincts and how to tune into their baby's needs.
"It's perfectly normal to lack confidence at the beginning because nothing can fully prepare you for becoming a parent. It's a huge adjustment to make and SPACE is a fantastic way of providing the support that every new parent needs.
Babies thrive in the Playcentre environment thanks to the range of play activities available and the social benefits of interacting with other children."
SPACE is a year-long course and is limited to 12 babies and their parents. It will run at Katikati Playcentre each Friday morning.
The cost is a $30 donation per term and morning tea is provided. To book a place on the 2011 SPACE programme phone Ruth McDermott on 570 0085 or email: ruth.wboppa@xtra.co.nz.
