Everyone knows fashion is cyclical, constantly taking inspiration from its past. In 2008, the global financial crisis created a runway return to the simple forms and sombre colours of the 1940s and 50s. The world was told to pinch its pennies and fashion responded with post-war-like restraint.
But it's been three years
of doom and gloom and, to be quite frank, I'm tired of it. I'm like a 7-year-old kid waiting for the grown-ups to finish talking, tugging at their shirts while incessantly whining "are we done yet?"
The fashion industry, it would seem, has given up waiting and whining and headed straight to the candy store, counteracting its period of restraint with an abundance of unadulterated joy. And you know what? Thank goodness!
This year we've seen a gradual return to the bright colours and bold shapes of the 1970s.
From wide-leg palazzo pants, to rompers and jumpsuits, come spring the grooving 70s will be back in full swing.
Shoe designers, both here and abroad, have taken heed, injecting their spring collections with so much fun I'm champing at the bit for the sun to return. Local designers Chaos & Harmony were inspired by a relaxed Californian freedom, while Kathryn Wilson continues to use her trademark blindingly bright shades of blue, red, pink and orange, mixed with shots of silver, gold and floral.
Expect to see similar themes elsewhere. There will be plenty of bold, bright colours, platforms and more wedges than you can shake a stick at.
Heels will be chunky and often stacked. There'll be mixed textures, cut-out patterns and fabulous prints.
