As every parent knows, children can push you to your absolute limits.
So any advice you can glean from others who have 'been there, done that' can prove invaluable.
Te Puna Playcentre is bringing acclaimed family therapist and author Diane Levy to Tauranga this Tuesday to speak at Baycourt to help parents
navigate those challenging toddler, tween and teen years.
Levy, author of Of course I love you! Now Go To Your Room! aims to provide practical and helpful advice on how to make parents' lives easier.
During her one-off Tauranga seminar she will talk specifically about how to support our children's angry and upset feelings. Levy says the general Kiwi way of looking at childish tantrums is to describe them as attention-seeking. "When we have an angry, upset child in front of us, we often have an urge to ignore them or exile them so that they will learn that that they cannot get away with that sort of behaviour," she says.
But Levy will show parents how she has developed a different way of thinking about our children's anger, how to sort out whether we are dealing with a wobbly of control, upset or despair and practical suggestions about what we can do.
Her other main focus will be how to get children to do as they are told. She also tackles the difficult topics of hitting, biting, snatching, swearing and how to sort out the sort of mayhem that can happen when we deal with sibling scraps.
Signed books will also be available for purchase. One book for $30, two books for $55, or three books for $80.
