Posthumous Joyce Young show

Joyce Young, of New Plymouth, was a renowned Taranaki artist. She sadly passed away suddenly in August this year, aged 85.

This exhibition of her work had been organised prior to her death and her family has encouraged it in her honour.

Born in Otorohanga, she moved to Pyes Pa, Tauranga, in 1939 with her parents and five siblings.

She attended Tauranga College, when it was co-ed, and won the Tauranga Society of Artists Claudia Jarman Art Award in 1948.

Joyce continued with her art and pottery, winning numerous awards throughout New Zealand.

She painted in watercolour, acrylics and pastels and was an active member of many art groups, including the New Plymouth Potters Group, Taranaki Art Society, NZ Potters and the Pastel Artists of NZ (PANZ) and was a foundation member of the Taranaki Floral Society (50 years ago).

As a gardener, she was involved in the Taranaki Rhododendron Society Garden Festival, opening her various gardens (wherever she lived) to the public, showcasing her art and pottery.

Her pottery and art has been commissioned throughout New Zealand and Australia and internationally.
