Tauranga finally has a venue big enough to draw world-class entertainers to this city and tonight's Pink Floyd tribute concert - dubbed The First Big Gig - will showcase exactly what the TECT Arena is capable of.

The arena at Baypark is designed to host up to 4600 fans and tonight's show by South Island band The Lynch Mob is set to wow the audience with their full reproduction of the iconic Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon.

Tauranga City Venues Ltd general manager Ervin McSweeney says The First Big Gig is a great chance to experience Tauranga's newest concert venue before international star Meatloaf's sold-out Guilty Pleasure concert on October 28.

Baypark management hopes the two events will attract the local support needed to help establish TECT Arena and Tauranga on the national and international concert circuit.

The Lynch Mob, who headlined last year's Queenstown Winter Festival Opening Party, are renowned for their theatricality by delivering extraordinary lighting and visuals to complement their shows.

They will be joined on stage by 24 children from Mount Maunganui Primary school, who will help perform Brick in the Wall.

Local band Nine Mile Stone will be the first to step on stage as the support act for tonight's show.

The group cite Pink Floyd as one of their early influences and will be bringing a seven-piece band to help them perform selected songs from their debut album All Roads Lead Home.
