Katikati Men's Choir is looking to expand and is searching for men to join the current 11 members.
Under the direction of Jeanette Hasell-Back they perform a wide range of songs at various venues throughout Katikati including for retirement villages, at Christmas functions, Probus, RSA Ladies section, bowling clubs andother community clubs and functions.
Last week was the third year the group has sung at the Anzac Memorial Service in Katikati. The first song the choir performed, Spirit of Anzac, was composed by Jeanette with words written by Mike Subritsky of Auckland.
The group, aged from the 40s to the 80s has been going three years and of them only one had sung before.
``Most are beginners, but they are fast learners. We do exercises for voice control and breathing and follow the same procedures as for the National Choir.
``We sing wherever we're asked and perform tunes from shows, mainly light classical, enjoyable music. It depends on who has asked us to sing. We do get requests to sing certain songs and the members have favourites they want to sing as well,'' says Jeanette.
Jeanette has many years' experience having led the Taranaki Male Choir and been assistant accompanist for other choirs as well as the National Men's Choir regional practises, plus being the music specialist at a high school and intermediate in New Plymouth.
Men of any age can join, younger members are most welcome.
They meet at the Baptist Church, Wedgewood Street, Katikati on Tuesdays, 7-8.30pm.
