Audrey was such a cute little plant when nerdy florist Seymour Krelborn discovered her... then she turned into a sassy, man eating monster intent on global domination.
Sound like a Hollywood B-movie? That's exactly what creators of Little Shop of Horrors intended to spoof when the black comedy first cameout in the 1960s, and again as a popular Steve Martin/Rick Moranis movie in 1986.
Tauranga Musical Theatre (TMT) are excited to bring Audrey back to to life again with their version of the rock 'n'roll musical.
There are four Audreys, says TMT president and Little Shop of Horrors director Elise Rohde. "The biggest one is 2m high and 1.8m wide not counting all the foliage. She pretty much takes up the entire stage."
Elise says it's been challenging for the 12 cast members to work around the massive plant. The Audreys were originally made in Palmerston North and TMT have purchased them. They are made from a variety of fabrics and material and are moved by a puppeteer.
The classic story (which is based more on the 1986 movie) tells about hapless florist Seymour who discovers an exotic plant during a total eclipse. But the plant grows into a sassy, ill-tempered manipulative carnivore who sings and dances. Seymour sells his soul to the foul-mouthed plant and hilarity ensues.
The musical includes hits such as Skid Row (Downtown), Somewhere That's Green, and Suddenly, Seymour.
