Plots, tricks, murders and lies, the story of Othello is Shakespearean tragedy at its very best, and this month the chicanery will be performed at the Detour Theatre.
"In the words of Othello himself, it is a passionate and entertaining tale of 'one that loved not wisely but too well',"says director Devon Williamson.
He says while the play is 400-years-old, the theatre's annual Shakespeare productions are lively and surprisingly easy to follow.
"We work very, very hard at making the characters and story engaging and understood. I have no doubt that audiences new to our theatre will be surprised at how entertaining and accessible our production is. Shakespeare's plays were written to entertain ... 400 years later we're loving the experience of making them entertain still."
Othello, a Moor, is a highly esteemed general in the service of Venice.
The victim of a malicious campaign of deception by his one-time friend, Iago, Othello's jealousy is inflamed; leading him to destroy all he loves including his beautiful new wife, Desdemona, and ultimately himself.
Williamson has been keen to produce Othello for at least 15 years and says David Tauranga's performance in Detour's production of Macbeth motivated him to do Othello next.
"We hadn't even finished Macbeth and the lead actors were signing up for Othello. David's performances are powerful, emotional and action-packed. He's mesmerising to watch as Othello".
