DETOUR Theatre brings light relief to the stresses of the pre-Christmas season in its latest hit comedy Twas the Fight Before Christmas.

Think your family is complicated? Meet the most dysfunctional family you can imagine as they try to navigate Christmas. Peace on earth and goodwill to all men? Not likely! Ever since her husband died, Mary's horrible adult children have been ruining Christmas. This year, with the help of a suicidal French psychiatrist, Mary is determined to take Christmas back. The show promises to be a hilarious and uplifting Christmas comedy.

"The play is a comic feast. It's jam-packed with hilarious madcap comedy and outrageous characters that'll have the audience laughing in the aisles and feeling grateful for their own family - no matter how terrible they are!" says director Kim Williamson, who also plays the role of the long-suffering mother, Mary.

"Mary is so desperate to take control of her family she embarks on the most hysterical programme of mind games imaginable, aided by her French neighbour who is completely unhinged himself. It is all utterly mad but at the same time I know that everyone in the audience is going to identify the characters with members of their own families!"

Boasting a top-class local cast, the production includes Susi Jansen and Sarah Oemcke who play Mary's delightfully horrible adult children with relish.

The ever-popular Chris Traill takes the role of the riotous French psychologist who is in desperate need of psychological help himself. Lisa Thorne portrays the potty, busybody neighbour with a conspiracy theory for everything and Chris Parnell plays the adorable but dim son-in-law who is in love with one of Mary's daughters but married to the other.

The play is from the pen of New Zealand playwright Devon Williamson who also wrote Detour Theatre's hit comedy The Old People Are Revolting. With over 70 productions of his plays in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and the UK, Williamson has established himself as a popular and topical comedy playwright.

This is the theatre's final production for 2015.
